What is MUD\WTR?

MUD\WTR is a functional beverage brand created by Shane Heath as an alternative to relying on several cups of coffee each day. Its best-known product combines cacao, masala chai, spices and mushroom ingredients in a powder that is mixed with hot water or milk.

The company has expanded beyond its original morning blend. The current range includes a matcha-based morning drink, a caffeine-free evening rooibos blend, mushroom coffee, turmeric and cacao products, coconut creamer, sweetener, individual stick packs and a plant-based protein powder.

Our quick verdict

MUD\WTR earns a 4.4/5 editorial rating. It is a thoughtfully designed coffee alternative for people who enjoy chai, cacao and a slower morning ritual but want less caffeine than a conventional cup of coffee.

The Original and Matcha blends provide clearly stated caffeine and mushroom totals, while Rest offers a genuinely caffeine-free evening option. Nourish broadens the brand into functional protein. The main disadvantages are premium pricing, noticeable sediment, a flavor that does not closely imitate black coffee and limited finished-product clinical evidence.

What makes MUD\WTR different?

  • Lower-caffeine morning options: Original contains approximately 35 mg of caffeine and Matcha contains 55 mg.
  • Organic formulas: the featured beverages are listed as USDA Organic.
  • Functional mushroom blends: products use combinations of lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, cordyceps and turkey tail.
  • Ritual-focused kits: starter products may include an aluminum tin, rechargeable frother and access to mindfulness content.
  • Multiple times of day: the range includes stimulating morning blends and a caffeine-free evening formula.
  • Subscription flexibility: deliveries can be adjusted, delayed, swapped or canceled through the customer account.

Important note about the mushroom ingredients

MUD\WTR states that its featured blends use both mushroom fruiting bodies and mycelial biomass cultured on organic oats or organic sorghum. This differs from brands that advertise fruiting-body-only extracts.

Using mycelium is not automatically a flaw, but shoppers should understand what they are comparing. A total such as “2,240 mg mushrooms” refers to the brand’s full mushroom blend and does not necessarily equal the same amount of concentrated fruiting-body extract used in a clinical study.

The company provides total mushroom quantities and several individual ingredient amounts on current product pages. That is more informative than an undisclosed proprietary blend, although finished-product evidence remains limited.

Best overall: Original, 30 Servings

MUD\WTR Original is the best introduction to the brand. It has a cacao-and-chai flavor rather than a coffee flavor and contains approximately 35 mg of caffeine per serving.

The ingredient list includes organic cacao, black tea powder, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, Himalayan pink salt and a mushroom blend containing chaga, reishi, lion’s mane and cordyceps.

Each tablespoon-sized serving provides 20 calories, 4 g of carbohydrate, 1 g of fiber, no sugar and a listed total of 2,240 mg of mushroom ingredients. The brand currently identifies approximately 560 mg each of lion’s mane, chaga, reishi and cordyceps.

The 30-serving tin was listed at $50 as a one-time purchase and $40 with subscription at the time of review. A 90-serving bag lowers the subscription cost per serving further, but the smaller tin is the safer first purchase because taste is subjective.

Original works best for people who enjoy earthy cacao and masala chai. It will not satisfy someone looking for the roasted bitterness or aroma of black coffee.

Best for matcha drinkers: Matcha, 30 Servings

MUD\WTR Matcha is the better morning choice for people who already enjoy green tea. Each serving contains 55 mg of caffeine, 2,200 mg of Japanese matcha powder and a listed total of 3,000 mg of mushroom ingredients.

The four-mushroom blend contains reishi, lion’s mane, cordyceps and chaga, with 750 mg of each listed on the current product page. Cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cardamom and Himalayan salt complete the formula.

The blend has 20 calories, 1 g of fiber and no sugar per serving. It tastes earthy and lightly spiced. Unlike pure whisked matcha, it includes mushrooms and spices, so traditional matcha purists may find the profile too complex.

The current 30-serving tin was listed at $50 one time or $40 with subscription. This is expensive compared with ordinary green tea but more affordable than many café matcha lattes when prepared at home.

Best caffeine-free evening option: Rest Starter Kit

MUD WTR Rest rooibos evening blend with herbs and mushrooms
Rest is a caffeine-free rooibos blend with reishi, turkey tail, valerian, passionflower, ashwagandha and chamomile. Image source: MUD\WTR.

MUD\WTR Rest is a separate evening formula rather than a coffee replacement. It combines rooibos tea extract with turkey tail, reishi, lucuma, valerian root, passionflower, ashwagandha, chamomile and chai-style spices.

Each serving contains no caffeine, no sugar, 20 calories and a listed 2,240 mg total of mushroom ingredients. The current page identifies 1,120 mg each of turkey tail and reishi, along with quantified amounts of several herbs.

The starter kit includes a 30-serving tin and a rechargeable frother. Its normal one-time price was listed at $60, with temporary promotional and subscription pricing displayed at the time of review.

Rest may fit a calming bedtime ritual, but it is not a treatment for insomnia or another sleep disorder. Valerian, passionflower, ashwagandha and chamomile may interact with medication or may not suit pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain health conditions.

Best protein option: Nourish Chocolate Starter Kit

MUD WTR Nourish chocolate plant protein powder
Nourish Chocolate combines plant protein with mushrooms, ashwagandha, bacopa, probiotics and vitamin D3. Image source: MUD\WTR.

Nourish Chocolate is the most nutritionally substantial product in this comparison. Each two-scoop serving provides 25 g of plant protein from pea and brown rice, 180 calories, 3 g of fiber and 3 g of total sugar.

The functional additions include 1,000 mg lion’s mane, 1,000 mg cordyceps, 300 mg ashwagandha extract, 300 mg bacopa monnieri extract, 2 billion CFU of Bacillus coagulans at the time of production and 20 mcg of vitamin D3.

The Chocolate Starter Kit contains 15 servings and a stainless-steel shaker. Its normal one-time price was listed at $80, with temporary sale and subscription prices shown on the current page.

Nourish can supplement protein intake, but it is not automatically a complete meal. Its price per serving is high compared with basic pea or whey protein, so the value depends on whether the additional mushroom, botanical and probiotic ingredients are genuinely useful to the buyer.

Does MUD\WTR taste like coffee?

No. Original tastes closer to hot cacao blended with masala chai. The cacao is noticeable, but the drink is earthy and spice-forward rather than sweet. Matcha tastes like an earthy, spiced green drink. Rest is softer and more herbal, while Nourish is a conventional chocolate protein shake.

This distinction matters because many negative first impressions come from expecting a direct coffee replica. MUD\WTR is more successful as a new beverage ritual than as an exact flavor replacement for espresso or drip coffee.

Texture and sediment

The powders contain ingredients that do not dissolve completely. Sediment can collect at the bottom of the cup, especially when the drink is prepared only with a spoon.

A frother improves suspension but does not permanently dissolve mushroom and spice particles. Stirring again halfway through the drink, using warm milk or preparing it over ice can improve the experience. The final sip may still feel gritty.

People who strongly prefer a clear tea or filtered coffee may dislike the texture regardless of flavor.

How to prepare it

  1. Add one tablespoon of the selected blend to a mug.
  2. Add approximately 6–8 ounces of hot water or warm milk.
  3. Froth or stir thoroughly.
  4. Add creamer or sweetener only when needed.
  5. Stir again if sediment settles.

Original and Matcha can also be served over ice. Using a smaller amount of water creates a richer drink, while additional milk softens spice and earthiness.

Caffeine comparison

MUD\WTR compares Original with a typical cup of coffee, which often contains substantially more caffeine. The current product pages list:

  • Original: approximately 35 mg per serving.
  • Matcha: 55 mg per serving.
  • Rest: 0 mg per serving.

Lower caffeine does not mean no stimulant effect. People who are highly sensitive, pregnant, breastfeeding, taking stimulant medication or managing certain cardiovascular conditions should discuss caffeine intake with a healthcare professional.

What does the research support?

The formulas contain ingredients that have been studied individually, including caffeine, lion’s mane, cordyceps, reishi, ashwagandha, valerian, probiotics and dietary protein. The evidence varies by ingredient, dose, extract and population.

Research on one purified mushroom extract cannot automatically be applied to a finished cacao-and-chai drink. MUD\WTR’s product pages cite research related to individual ingredients, but large independent clinical trials on the complete retail formulas are limited.

The most predictable effects are the basic ones: Original and Matcha provide caffeine; Nourish provides a meaningful protein dose; Rest contains no caffeine. Claims involving immunity, focus, stress, gut health or sleep are less certain for an individual customer.

Organic certification and testing

The featured blends are marketed as USDA Organic, non-GMO, vegan and gluten-free. MUD\WTR also states that products are third-party tested.

Certification and testing help address manufacturing and ingredient-quality questions, but they do not prove that a product will produce every advertised benefit. Customers with strict allergy, sport-testing or medical requirements should request current documentation for the exact batch and product.

Subscription, shipping and returns

Subscriptions currently include free standard U.S. shipping and can be scheduled every 30, 60 or 90 days. Customers can delay a shipment, change products, adjust frequency or cancel through the subscription account.

For one-time U.S. orders, current standard shipping is listed at $5 with an estimated four-to-eight-business-day service. Faster options cost more. MUD\WTR currently ships to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, with regional restrictions and different shipping charges.

The company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible first-time customers. Unopened subscription orders may also be returned under the published process, although a return-label fee can be deducted. Customers must use the authorized return procedure.

Safety and cautions

  • Original and Matcha contain caffeine.
  • The mushroom blends are cultured on organic oats or sorghum according to the label.
  • Rest includes valerian, passionflower, ashwagandha and chamomile.
  • Nourish contains several botanical and probiotic ingredients in addition to protein.
  • People taking medication, preparing for surgery, pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a healthcare professional.
  • These products should not be used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.

What we like

  • Original contains much less caffeine than typical coffee.
  • Clear caffeine and total mushroom quantities on major product pages.
  • USDA Organic featured formulas.
  • Morning, evening and protein products within one system.
  • Starter kits include practical accessories.
  • Flexible subscription management and a 30-day first-order guarantee.

What could be better

  • High price per serving.
  • Flavor is not a close substitute for black coffee.
  • Sediment and gritty texture may bother some users.
  • The mushroom formulas include mycelial biomass cultured on grain.
  • Limited independent research on the complete finished products.
  • Subscription promotions can make one-time price comparisons confusing.

Who should consider MUD\WTR?

  • Coffee drinkers who want to reduce, not necessarily eliminate, caffeine.
  • People who enjoy cacao, chai or matcha flavors.
  • Customers seeking an organic powdered morning ritual.
  • Users who want a caffeine-free evening drink in the same product family.
  • Plant-based protein users interested in additional functional ingredients.

Who may want to look elsewhere?

  • People who want a beverage that tastes exactly like coffee.
  • Budget shoppers seeking the lowest cost per serving.
  • Customers who dislike sediment or earthy flavors.
  • Buyers who require fruiting-body-only mushroom extracts.
  • Anyone expecting a supplement drink to treat a medical condition.

Final verdict: Is MUD\WTR worth buying?

MUD\WTR is worth considering when the goal is to build a lower-caffeine ritual rather than find an exact coffee imitation. Original is the best overall starting point, while Matcha suits green-tea drinkers and Rest offers the clearest caffeine-free use case. Nourish Chocolate is useful for buyers who want meaningful protein, but it is the most expensive product per serving in this comparison.

The brand is strongest on convenience, organic ingredients, distinctive flavor and product variety. Its functional benefits should be interpreted cautiously because evidence on individual ingredients does not guarantee the same result from the complete commercial blend.

Start with a 30-serving product rather than a 90-serving bag, use the return period if the flavor or texture is unsuitable and review the current ingredients, caffeine, price and subscription terms before ordering.
