What is Cometeer?
Cometeer is a specialty-coffee company that brews coffee at high concentration, flash-freezes it and seals the frozen extract inside recyclable aluminum capsules. Instead of grinding beans or using a pod machine, customers melt one capsule into water or milk to make hot coffee, iced coffee, lattes, Americanos and short espresso-style drinks.
The idea began with cofounder Matt Roberts, who wanted to make exceptional specialty coffee easier to reproduce at home. In 2014 he presented an early frozen-coffee prototype to respected coffee professional George Howell. Cometeer later combined coffee sourcing and roasting expertise with engineering work from a team that included CTO Doug Hoon.

Cometeer earns a 4.8/5 editorial rating. It is one of the most convincing convenience formats for people who care about specialty-coffee flavor but do not want to grind, weigh and brew beans every morning.
The strongest advantages are consistency, speed, access to respected roasters and the ability to prepare several drink styles without a machine. The main disadvantages are premium pricing, high caffeine in full-strength capsules, freezer-space requirements, dry-ice delivery and a restrictive refund policy that generally does not allow returns simply because a customer dislikes the taste.
How Cometeer coffee works
Cometeer says it uses a proprietary precision-brewing process to extract coffee at approximately ten times normal drinking strength. Immediately after brewing, the liquid is flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen at approximately -321°F to reduce oxidation and preserve volatile flavor compounds.
The capsule contains only brewed coffee extract made from coffee and water. It is not dehydrated or freeze-dried instant coffee, and there are no coffee grounds inside the capsule.
The standard preparation methods are simple:
- Hot coffee: pop a frozen puck into a mug and add 6–8 ounces of hot water.
- Iced coffee: melt the capsule, pour it into 6–8 ounces of cold water and add ice.
- Hot latte: melt the coffee into approximately 6 ounces of steamed milk or a dairy alternative.
- Iced latte: pour melted coffee into cold milk and add ice.
- Espresso-style drink: melt the capsule first and combine it with a small amount of hot water.
- Affogato: melt a capsule over vanilla ice cream.
No proprietary coffee machine is required. A kettle, cup and freezer are enough for the basic experience.
Is Cometeer the same as a coffee pod?
Cometeer resembles a pod because each serving is packaged individually, but the capsule does not go into a brewing machine. Conventional pod systems store dry ground coffee and extract it at the moment of use. Cometeer stores coffee that has already been brewed and frozen.
This changes the trade-offs. Cometeer eliminates machine maintenance, brewing variation and used wet grounds in the home. In exchange, the customer must keep the capsules frozen and pay for temperature-controlled shipping.
Best tasting experience: World Mug Collection
The World Mug Collection is the most interesting introduction for customers who want to compare origins rather than commit immediately to one roast profile. The limited collection includes 32 cups representing 16 coffees from 16 producing countries, with two capsules of each coffee.
The accompanying format turns tasting into a tournament. Customers compare coffees head to head, record preferences in the Cometeer app and gradually build a profile around the origins, processing methods and roast styles they enjoy.
At the time of this review, the collection was listed at $99 as a one-time purchase or $79 as an introductory membership purchase. The membership then renews with a standard 40-capsule box at the current membership rate.
This is the best option for curious specialty-coffee drinkers, couples or gift recipients. It is less suitable for someone who wants the same predictable dark roast every morning, and the collection is limited rather than permanently guaranteed to remain in stock.
Best overall recurring box: Mixed Roast Curated Box
The Mixed Roast Curated Box is the best overall recurring choice because it includes light, medium and dark coffees. The variation helps a new customer learn whether they prefer fruit-forward black coffee, chocolate-led medium roasts or heavier coffee for milk-based drinks.
The standard membership currently provides 40 capsules every four weeks for $80, or about $2 per cup. A comparable one-time curated purchase has recently been listed around $99–$105 depending on the active configuration and promotion.

The current price is $69 for a 40-capsule membership box or $99 for a one-time purchase. Full decaf capsules generally contain around 9 mg of caffeine, while half-caff capsules contain approximately 90 mg.
Decaffeination method varies by roaster and coffee. Current options may use sugarcane, Swiss Water, honey-process approaches or conventional FDA-permitted methods. Customers with a strong preference should inspect the details for each roast rather than assume the whole box uses one process.

Caffeine: an important consideration
Cometeer states that a typical full-caffeine capsule contains approximately 180 mg of caffeine. Half-caff capsules contain around 90 mg, while decaf capsules contain approximately 9 mg.
These values vary naturally by coffee, but 180 mg is a substantial serving. Two full-caffeine capsules could provide around 360 mg before including tea, soda, energy drinks, chocolate, medication or other caffeine sources.
The FDA commonly cites 400 mg per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults, but individual tolerance differs. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, caffeine-sensitive, taking stimulant medication or managing anxiety, sleep, heart-rhythm or blood-pressure concerns should seek appropriate professional guidance.
Calories and ingredients
Each capsule contains only coffee and water. Cometeer currently lists approximately 11 calories and 2 g of carbohydrate per capsule. The final drink changes when milk, cream, sugar, syrup or ice cream is added.
Tasting notes such as chocolate, cherry, caramel or almond describe naturally perceived flavor characteristics of the coffee. They do not mean those foods or allergens are added to the capsule.
Does Cometeer taste like freshly brewed specialty coffee?
Cometeer can taste significantly closer to a well-prepared café coffee than ordinary instant coffee or many mass-market pods. The extraction has already been optimized, and freezing protects the brewed coffee from the staling that occurs in an opened bag of ground beans.
It is not identical to every freshly brewed method. A skilled home brewer can adjust grind size, water composition, temperature, ratio and extraction for a particular bean. Cometeer intentionally removes those variables in exchange for consistency.
The format is most compelling for people who want high-quality iced coffee, fast lattes or dependable coffee in a home where brewing equipment would otherwise go unused.
Freezer storage and what happens when capsules melt
Capsules should be moved to the freezer immediately after delivery. Cometeer currently markets up to three years of frozen freshness; customers should follow the best-by date etched on each capsule.
Melted capsules can remain at room temperature for approximately 24 hours. Current support guidance says they can also be stored in the refrigerator for several days, with some recent instructions allowing up to one week. For the best flavor, keep them frozen until close to use.
If a shipment arrives cool, partially frozen or recently melted, the capsules can generally be refrozen. If they arrive warm or appear to have been outside the safe quality window, contact customer support rather than assuming they are suitable.
Dry-ice delivery and freezer space
Cometeer ships frozen coffee with dry ice. The package should be opened in a ventilated area, and dry ice should not be touched with bare skin or placed in a sealed container.
A 40-capsule order requires more freezer space than a bag of beans. Customers with a small freezer should measure available room before ordering several boxes or increasing subscription frequency.
Sustainability claims
Cometeer says the aluminum capsules, lids and shipping materials are curbside recyclable. Because the coffee grounds remain at Cometeer’s production facility, the used household capsule does not contain wet grounds that need to be scraped or rinsed out.
The company also says its spent grounds are sent to local composting operations and that long frozen shelf life reduces waste from stale beans or leftover brewed coffee.
These benefits should be balanced against dry-ice production, insulated frozen shipping and freezer energy use. The environmental result depends on what the product replaces and whether local recycling actually accepts the aluminum packaging.
Membership and subscription management
The common membership price is currently around $80 for 40 full-caffeine capsules every four weeks. Members can customize coffee selections, change delivery cadence, pause or cancel before the processing date.
Cometeer says subscription orders generally process on Sundays and ship within the following business days. Once an order is processed and confirmed, it normally cannot be canceled or edited.
Membership can save around $20–$25 compared with a one-time curated box, but only when the household consistently consumes the coffee. Review the upcoming order before each processing date to avoid building excess frozen inventory.
Shipping area, cost and timing
Cometeer currently ships only within the contiguous United States. It does not provide standard international service or routine shipping to Alaska and Hawaii.
Standard shipping is currently listed at $12.99. The company aims to dispatch orders within one to four business days, followed by approximately one to three business days in transit. Express shipping may be offered for $27.99 on qualifying first or one-time orders.
Frozen shipping is more sensitive to delays than ordinary coffee delivery. Track the package and move it to the freezer promptly after arrival.
Returns, refunds and damaged orders
Cometeer generally does not accept product returns because of the frozen and perishable nature of the goods. Orders also cannot normally be canceled after they have been processed.
Refunds, credits or replacement shipments may be offered when items are missing, damaged, warm on arrival or otherwise fail to meet the company’s standards. Customers should report a problem within 14 days of receipt and provide photographs or other requested information.
