Pela is a Canadian accessories brand best known for plant-based phone cases. The most important distinction: classic cases versus clear cases
Pela’s classic soft-touch cases and its clear cases should not be treated as the same product. The classic line is made with Flaxstic®, which Pela describes as a compostable bioplastic elastomer mixed with flax straw. The company says its base material meets ASTM D6400-04 and EN 13432 standards for industrial composting and can also break down in a suitable home-composting environment.
The clear line takes a different route. Current clear-case pages describe a transparent back and shock-absorbing edges made from 100% post-consumer recycled material, with GRS certification referenced by the brand. These cases are MagSafe-ready, but they are not presented as the same compostable Flaxstic construction. Shoppers who prioritize compostability should verify the material of the exact case rather than relying on Pela’s brand-level reputation.
Materials and compostability
Flax shive is an agricultural by-product, and the visible flecks give classic Pela cases their characteristic texture. The brand states that its Flaxstic material is tested to be free from phthalates, BPA, cadmium and lead. Those claims are useful, but they do not make the case impact-free; raw-material processing, manufacturing and shipping still have an environmental footprint.
