Review note

We may not have personally tested every product. This review is based on official product information, product specifications and comparative research. It is not medical advice.

What is Orgain?

Orgain is a U.S. nutrition company founded by physician and cancer survivor Andrew Abraham, M.D. The company traces its origin to the homemade nutrition shakes Abraham prepared while recovering from cancer treatment and struggling to find convenient products that matched his ingredient preferences.

Orgain launched commercially in 2009 and now sells plant-based and dairy protein powders, ready-to-drink nutrition shakes, high-protein sports products, collagen, bars and children’s nutrition products. Orgain is currently part of Nestlé Health Science and is also a Certified B Corporation.

The range is broader than the brand’s green-and-white organic protein tubs suggest. Some Orgain products are vegan protein supplements, some are fortified nutrition shakes, some are dairy-based sports drinks, and others are collagen products that do not contain a complete amino-acid profile.

Our quick verdict

Orgain earns a 4.8/5 editorial rating. It offers unusually broad protein and nutrition options, competitive direct pricing, strong organic and plant-based certifications, and a generous 60-day direct-order return period.

Organic Protein Plant Based Protein Powder is the best overall product for most adults seeking a versatile vegan protein powder. Organic Nutrition Shake is the best ready-to-drink meal or snack because it supplies 250 calories, 16 g dairy protein and 20 vitamins and minerals. 30g Plant Protein Powder is the better sports option, while Organic Protein + Superfoods is best for customers prioritizing additional fiber and a broad plant blend.

The main weaknesses are that product purposes can be confusing, several formulas contain fermentable fibers or sweeteners that may cause digestive discomfort, and Orgain products are currently not NSF Certified for Sport. Competitive athletes subject to drug testing may prefer a batch-tested sports certification.

Choosing by the word “protein” alone can lead to the wrong product. The total calories, amino-acid profile, vitamins, allergens and intended use differ substantially.

Best overall: Organic Protein Plant Based Protein Powder

Organic Protein Plant Based Protein Powder in Creamy Chocolate Fudge is the most versatile Orgain product in this review. The current 2.03 lb canister contains approximately 20 servings and costs $37.99.

Every two-scoop, 46 g serving currently provides:

  • 150 calories
  • 21 g plant-based protein
  • 7 g dietary fiber
  • Less than 1 g total sugar
  • 0 g added sugar
  • 4.5 g fat
  • 390 mg sodium
  • 8 mg iron

The protein blend uses organic pea protein, brown-rice protein, mung-bean protein and chia seed. Combining legume and grain proteins improves the overall amino-acid profile compared with relying on one source alone.

The powder is USDA Organic, certified plant-based, gluten-free, non-GMO, kosher and made without dairy, lactose or soy ingredients. It is sweetened with stevia and also contains acacia fiber, agave inulin, guar gum and xanthan gum.

Protein quality and amino acids

The current Chocolate formula provides approximately 1.77 g leucine, 1.22 g valine and 1 g isoleucine per serving. These branched-chain amino acids participate in muscle-protein synthesis.

A complete amino-acid profile does not mean one serving maximizes muscle growth for every user. Response depends on total daily protein, age, body size, exercise and the distribution of protein across meals.

People seeking a larger post-workout dose may prefer the 30 g product or combine the original powder with another protein-rich food.

Is the original powder a meal replacement?

At 150 calories, it is better classified as a protein supplement than a full meal. Mixing it only with water may not supply enough energy, fat, carbohydrate or micronutrient variety for breakfast or lunch.

To build a more complete meal, combine it with options such as:

  • Milk or fortified plant milk
  • Fruit
  • Oats
  • Nut or seed butter
  • Yogurt or a dairy-free alternative

These additions change the calorie and nutrition totals and should be included in weight-management planning.

Fiber, inulin and digestive tolerance

Seven grams of fiber is a meaningful amount for a protein powder. Acacia and agave inulin are fermentable fibers that may support regularity and feed selected intestinal bacteria.

They may also cause gas, bloating or bowel changes, especially when a person rapidly increases fiber or uses several prebiotic products together.

Begin with a smaller portion when sensitive. Persistent pain, severe bloating, vomiting, blood in stool or unexplained weight loss should be evaluated rather than treated by changing protein powders repeatedly.

Erythritol, stevia and flavor differences

Formulas vary by flavor and production update. Current Chocolate uses stevia and fermentable fibers, while selected Orgain products or historical formulas may also use erythritol or monk fruit.

Sugar alcohols ending in “-ol,” including erythritol, can cause gas or digestive symptoms in some people. Customers who dislike non-sugar sweeteners can choose the Natural Unsweetened version, which does not use stevia or erythritol.

Caffeine in Chocolate and Coffee flavors

Creamy Chocolate Fudge contains a small amount of naturally occurring caffeine from cocoa—less than one-fourteenth of the amount in a typical cup of coffee under Orgain’s current description.

The Iced Coffee version is much different and contains approximately 60 mg caffeine per serving. Check the exact flavor rather than assuming every Organic Protein product is caffeine-free.

Best ready-to-drink meal: Organic Nutrition Shake

Orgain Organic Nutrition Shake Creamy Chocolate Fudge 12-pack
The dairy-based Organic Nutrition Shake supplies 250 calories, 16 g protein and 20 vitamins and minerals in one 11 fl oz carton. Image source: Orgain.

Organic Nutrition Shake in Creamy Chocolate Fudge is the strongest Orgain choice when convenience and meal-like nutrition matter more than maximum protein.

The current 12-carton case costs $35.99. One 11 fl oz carton provides:

  • 250 calories
  • 16 g organic grass-fed milk and whey protein
  • 28 g carbohydrate
  • 1 g dietary fiber
  • 12 g total sugar
  • 11 g added sugar
  • 8 g fat
  • 270 mg sodium
  • 500 mg calcium
  • 20 vitamins and minerals

The product is fortified with vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, B vitamins, iodine, magnesium and other nutrients. It also contains an organic fruit-and-vegetable blend.

Meal replacement strengths and limitations

At 250 calories, the shake is more meal-like than Orgain protein powders, but it may still be a small meal for a larger or active adult.

It can work well as:

  • A portable breakfast when time is limited
  • A substantial snack
  • A nutrition backup during travel
  • A supplement to meals during reduced appetite

It contains 11 g added sugar and only 1 g fiber, so it should not automatically replace every whole-food meal.

Dairy and lactose warning

Organic Nutrition Shake contains milk-protein concentrate and whey-protein concentrate. Orgain states that it is not dairy-free and is not considered suitable for lactose intolerance, although individual tolerance varies.

People with cow’s-milk allergy should avoid it. Lactose intolerance and milk-protein allergy are different conditions; an allergy can cause serious immune reactions.

Orgain sells a separate Vegan Organic Nutrition Shake for customers who need a plant-based ready-to-drink product.

Best higher-protein product: 30g Plant Protein Powder

Orgain 30g Plant Protein Powder Vanilla canister
The current Vanilla sports powder provides 30 g plant protein, 9 g EAAs and BCAAs, and 4 g fiber per serving. Image source: Orgain.

30g Plant Protein Powder in Vanilla is the strongest featured option for post-workout or higher-protein use. The 2.01 lb canister contains approximately 16 servings and costs $44.99.

Every 57 g serving currently provides:

  • 210 calories
  • 30 g plant protein
  • 9 g essential amino acids and BCAAs
  • 4 g dietary fiber
  • 1 g total sugar
  • 0 g added sugar
  • 400 mg sodium
  • 8 mg iron

The formula combines pea, brown-rice and mung-bean protein with chia. It also includes tart cherry, fermented turmeric, ginger and a fruit-and-vegetable blend.

Thirty grams does not automatically make it superior

The serving is larger than the original powder: 57 g of product versus 46 g. The higher protein number partly reflects the larger scoop weight.

Thirty grams is useful when it matches the person’s target, but many adults can meet protein needs using smaller portions and protein-rich meals.

Orgain explicitly states that this powder is not considered a complete meal by itself. Pair it with carbohydrate, fat and food-based micronutrients when using it as breakfast or lunch.

Sports certification limitation

Orgain currently states that its products are not NSF Certified for Sport. The company emphasizes food-based formulas, USDA Organic certification and non-GMO verification, but these certifications have different purposes.

A competitive athlete subject to anti-doping rules may prefer a product certified by NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport because those programs screen for prohibited substances.

Non-tested recreational users may still value Orgain’s organic and plant-based certifications, but they should understand the distinction.

Best fiber and plant blend: Organic Protein + Superfoods

Orgain Organic Protein and 50 Superfoods Vanilla Bean canister
Protein + Superfoods supplies 21 g protein, 8 g fiber and a blend of 50 plant ingredients in the current Vanilla formula. Image source: Orgain.

Organic Protein + Superfoods in Vanilla Bean combines the standard plant-protein base with grains, sprouts, seeds, fruit, vegetables and herbs.

The 2.02 lb canister contains approximately 18 servings and costs $44.99.

Every two-scoop serving currently provides:

  • 160 calories
  • 21 g plant protein
  • 8 g dietary fiber
  • 1 g total sugar
  • 0 g added sugar
  • 4.5 g fat
  • 390 mg sodium
  • 6.4 mg iron
  • 16 mg vitamin C

What “50 superfoods” really means

The blend includes ingredients such as millet, amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, seeds, sprouts, wheat grass, barley grass, berries, vegetables, herbs and spices.

Orgain correctly states that one scoop is not intended to replace several servings of vegetables. The label does not provide the individual quantity of every plant ingredient, so it is impossible to compare most components with a specific research dose.

The strongest measurable benefits remain the protein and fiber. Treat the plant blend as a supplement to a varied diet, not a substitute for produce.

Does it contain probiotics?

The standard direct-to-consumer Organic Protein + Superfoods product currently does not contain added probiotics. A separate Costco version may include one billion probiotics.

Customers should not assume that products with nearly identical names have identical formulas.

Can Orgain help with weight loss?

Protein and fiber may support fullness, and measured shakes can simplify portion planning. Weight loss still requires an appropriate overall calorie deficit.

Adding Orgain to an unchanged diet can increase calorie intake. Turning a 150-calorie protein serving into a smoothie with milk, banana, oats and nut butter can create a 500–700 calorie meal.

People using GLP-1 medications, recovering from illness or experiencing unexplained weight loss should coordinate nutrition intake with a healthcare professional.

Can Orgain support muscle gain?

Plant protein can support muscle maintenance and growth when total protein intake and resistance training are adequate. Orgain’s pea, rice and mung-bean combinations supply all essential amino acids.

The 30g powder offers the largest protein and EAA amount among the featured products. The original 21g powder can still be effective as part of a protein-rich diet.

Protein powder does not replace progressive training, sufficient calories, sleep and recovery.

Iron and mineral intake

Plant-based powders in this review provide approximately 6.4–8 mg iron per serving. This is meaningful, particularly when combined with a multivitamin or several fortified foods.

People with iron-overload disorders or medical instructions to limit iron should review the Nutrition Facts panel. People with iron deficiency should not assume that protein powder alone will correct the condition.

Sodium is approximately 390–400 mg in the featured powders. This may matter for people following a prescribed sodium restriction.

Children, pregnancy and medical use

Orgain provides reduced serving suggestions for children using the original plant protein powder, but children have different calorie and protein needs. A pediatrician or registered dietitian should guide regular meal replacement, growth concerns or medical nutrition.

Pregnant and breastfeeding customers should review caffeine, sweeteners, allergens and total fortified-nutrient intake. Protein powders are not replacements for prenatal vitamins or pregnancy-specific nutrition care.

People with kidney disease, severe liver disease, food allergies, swallowing disorders or medically prescribed diets should seek individualized advice.

Quality, certifications and company standards

Many Orgain products are certified USDA Organic by QAI, certified non-GMO and carry kosher or plant-based certification where applicable. The exact seals vary by formula.

Orgain is a Certified B Corporation and says all suppliers are audited regularly for quality and food-safety assurance.

USDA Organic certification regulates agricultural and processing practices. It is not a guarantee that a product has more protein, fewer calories or stronger clinical effects than a conventional alternative.

Subscription program

Orgain’s current Subscribe & Save program offers:

  • 15% off the first and recurring subscription orders
  • Free shipping to the 48 contiguous states
  • Delivery every 30, 45, 60 or 90 days
  • Ability to change quantity, flavor and delivery frequency
  • Ability to skip or cancel without a fee
  • An email or text reminder three days before processing

Current calculated subscription references are approximately $32.29 for the $37.99 powder, $30.59 for the $35.99 shake case and $38.24 for a $44.99 powder.

Cancel or skip before the scheduled charge. Canceling after an order has entered processing does not automatically stop that shipment.

Shipping

Current one-time U.S. orders receive free ground shipping when the post-discount subtotal is at least $75. Orders below $75 have a flat $9.95 shipping-and-handling charge.

The free one-time shipping offer applies to the continental United States. Subscription orders receive free shipping to the 48 contiguous states regardless of order value.

Returns and exchanges

Orgain currently provides free returns and exchanges for products purchased directly from Orgain.com.

The customer must start the request within 60 days of order fulfillment. Orgain supplies a prepaid return label, and an approved refund can be returned to the original payment method or issued as store credit.

Products bought from Amazon, Costco, Target or another retailer normally follow that seller’s policy. Orgain also publishes a separate Satisfaction Guarantee for selected retail purchases.

Final verdict: Is Orgain worth buying?

Orgain is worth considering for customers who want accessible organic protein and a large choice of plant-based and dairy formulas.

Organic Protein Plant Based Protein Powder is the best overall starting point. Choose the Organic Nutrition Shake for a fortified ready-to-drink meal or snack, the 30g Plant Protein Powder for higher-protein sports use and Protein + Superfoods for additional fiber and plant ingredients.

Read the specific label rather than relying on the brand name. Confirm whether the product is a protein supplement, a fortified meal shake or a sports powder, then account for calories, fiber, caffeine, sodium and allergens in the rest of the diet.
