What is Chomps?

Chomps is a shelf-stable meat-snack company founded in 2012 by Pete Maldonado and Rashid Ali. The brand sells full-size and mini sticks made from grass-fed and grass-finished beef and venison, antibiotic-free turkey and domestically sourced antibiotic-free chicken.

The company’s main selling proposition is straightforward: portable animal protein with zero grams of sugar, short ingredient lists and no dairy, soy, wheat, artificial colors, MSG or conventional artificial preservatives.

Chomps currently offers beef, turkey, chicken and venison sticks, spicy and mild flavors, Chomplings mini sticks, school packs and variety packs. It is also a Certified B Corporation.

Our quick verdict

Chomps earns a 4.8/5 editorial rating. The brand is strongest for shoppers who want a convenient, shelf-stable snack with 10–12 g protein, zero sugar and a clearly disclosed ingredient list.

Protein Trial Pack is the best first purchase because it compares four meat sources and several seasoning styles. Original Beef remains the signature product, Original Turkey offers more protein with fewer calories and less saturated fat, and Sea Salt Beef Chomplings are the best portion-controlled mini option.

The main limitations are sodium, saturated fat in the beef sticks, the absence of fiber and the fact that meat sticks are processed meat products. They can be useful snacks but should not replace fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains or varied protein sources.

Best first purchase: Protein Trial Pack

The current Protein Trial Pack contains six full-size sticks and is listed at $16.99. It includes:

  • Original Beef
  • Jalapeño Beef
  • Smoky BBQ Beef
  • Original Turkey
  • Original Chicken
  • Salt & Pepper Venison

Each stick provides zero grams of sugar and either 10 or 12 g protein, depending on the meat. The trial pack is the best way to determine whether the user prefers richer beef and venison or leaner turkey and chicken.

Turkey and chicken deliver the most protein per calorie. Beef and venison have a richer taste and more fat. Sodium remains meaningful across the range.

Best overall flavor: Original Beef

Original Beef is sold in 10- and 24-stick boxes. The current 10-pack price is $25.60, or $2.56 per stick. Subscribe & Save is currently $23.04 with free shipping.

Each 33 g stick currently provides:

  • 100 calories
  • 10 g protein
  • 7 g total fat
  • 3 g saturated fat
  • 30 mg cholesterol
  • 380 mg sodium
  • 0 g carbohydrate
  • 0 g fiber
  • 0 g sugar

The current ingredients are grass-fed and grass-finished beef, water and less than two percent of encapsulated lactic acid, sea salt, cultured celery powder, cherry powder, black pepper, red pepper, garlic and coriander, inside a beef-collagen casing.

Grass-fed and grass-finished claims

Chomps says its beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished and Non-GMO Project Verified. The company currently sources beef from domestic and international suppliers.

Grass-fed sourcing can matter for animal-production preferences and may create small differences in fatty-acid composition. It does not make the finished stick low in saturated fat or sodium.

One Original Beef stick provides 15% of the Daily Value for saturated fat and 17% for sodium. The overall eating pattern remains more important than one sourcing claim.

Zero sugar does not make it a complete snack

Original Beef contains no carbohydrate, sugar or fiber. This can fit a low-carbohydrate plan, but it also means the stick does not provide fruit, vegetables, whole grains or fermentable fiber.

For a more balanced snack, pair it with:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Raw vegetables
  • Whole-grain crackers
  • A fiber-containing bean or hummus snack

Best leaner option: Original Turkey

Original Turkey provides 12 g protein in an 80-calorie full-size stick. Image source: Chomps.

Original Turkey is the strongest nutrition profile among the classic full-size products. The current 10-pack price is $25.60, while subscription pricing is $23.04.

Every 33 g stick currently provides:

  • 80 calories
  • 12 g protein
  • 3.5 g total fat
  • 1.5 g saturated fat
  • 45 mg cholesterol
  • 390 mg sodium
  • 0 g carbohydrate
  • 0 g sugar

The turkey is sourced domestically and raised without antibiotics under current company reporting.

Important dietary detail: the casing is beef

Original Turkey is stuffed in a beef-collagen casing. It is therefore not suitable for someone avoiding all beef ingredients for religious, ethical or dietary reasons.

The casing does not change the protein source listed on the front of the product, but it matters for customers who interpret “turkey stick” as an exclusively turkey-derived food.

Turkey provides more protein for fewer calories and half the saturated fat. It has slightly more sodium and a beef-derived casing.

Best mini option: Sea Salt Beef Chomplings

Sea Salt Beef Chomplings come in a 24-pack and currently cost $31.99, or approximately $1.33 per mini stick. Subscription pricing is $28.79.

Every 14 g mini stick provides:

  • 45 calories
  • 4 g protein
  • 3 g total fat
  • 1.5 g saturated fat
  • 15 mg cholesterol
  • 170 mg sodium
  • 0 g carbohydrate
  • 0 g sugar

The current formula uses grass-fed and grass-finished beef, water, encapsulated lactic acid, sea salt, cultured celery powder, cherry powder and garlic in a beef-collagen casing.

Mini does not automatically mean low sodium

The mini stick contains less total sodium than a full-size stick because the portion is smaller. Relative to its calorie content, 170 mg is still substantial.

Two minis provide 90 calories, 8 g protein and 340 mg sodium—close to a full-size beef stick. Portion size should therefore reflect actual hunger rather than the assumption that several minis do not count.

Are Chomps allergy-friendly?

Chomps says the current sticks are free from the top nine U.S. food allergens and are Spokin verified. They do not use dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish or sesame as direct ingredients.

This is valuable for many families, but customers with severe allergy should still inspect the exact wrapper and manufacturing statement because formulations can change.

Gluten-free, Whole30, paleo and keto labels

Many current sticks are Certified Gluten Free, Whole30 Approved, Certified Paleo and Keto Certified. Beef products also commonly carry Non-GMO Project Verification.

These certifications describe ingredients or compatibility with defined programs. They do not mean the stick is low in sodium, high in fiber or appropriate for unlimited intake.

“Keto-friendly” is not a medical claim and does not guarantee weight loss.

Celery powder, nitrates and curing

Chomps markets the products as having no added nitrates or nitrites except those naturally occurring in celery powder and sea salt.

The company explains that it uses natural curing agents—including salt, celery powder and cherry powder—together with cooking and moisture removal to preserve the sticks.

Celery powder can supply naturally occurring nitrate that participates in curing. The phrase “no artificial nitrates or nitrites” should not be interpreted as meaning the product is uncured in a practical food-processing sense.

Processed-meat context

Meat sticks are processed meat because the meat is seasoned, cured, cooked and preserved for shelf stability.

That does not mean an occasional stick is equivalent to an unhealthy overall diet. It does mean the product should be placed within a pattern that emphasizes vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish and varied lean proteins.

American Heart Association guidance recommends limiting red and processed meat and reducing sodium and saturated fat across the overall diet.

Sodium: the main nutritional trade-off

The full-size featured sticks provide approximately 380–390 mg sodium, equal to 17% of the current Daily Value. A mini contains 170 mg.

Two full-size sticks can provide approximately one-third of the Daily Value before counting meals and beverages.

People with hypertension, kidney disease, heart failure or a prescribed low-sodium diet should discuss appropriate limits with their healthcare professional.

Saturated fat and cholesterol

Original Beef provides 3 g saturated fat and Original Turkey provides 1.5 g. Choosing turkey or chicken can reduce saturated fat while preserving a high protein amount.

Dietary cholesterol is 30–45 mg per full-size stick. Current heart-health guidance focuses strongly on overall dietary patterns, including replacing some saturated-fat-rich foods with unsaturated-fat and plant-protein sources.

Can Chomps support weight loss?

A pre-portioned 80–100 calorie stick can be more filling than a similarly sized refined-carbohydrate snack because it supplies 10–12 g protein.

Weight loss still depends on total energy intake. A meat stick does not burn fat or create weight loss independently.

Using it with fruit or vegetables may create a more satisfying snack without turning every eating occasion into an animal-protein-only meal.

Can Chomps support muscle gain?

The protein can contribute to daily intake, but one stick provides only 10–12 g. Muscle growth requires adequate total protein, enough calories, resistance training and recovery.

For a substantial post-workout meal, most adults will need additional protein and carbohydrate from ordinary food.

Children and school snacks

Chomplings are smaller and easy to pack, and current products avoid the top nine allergens. They remain firm meat products that require chewing.

Parents should consider the child’s age, chewing ability, sodium intake and school rules. Cut the stick into age-appropriate pieces when needed and supervise young children.

Pregnancy and food safety

Chomps are shelf-stable, ready-to-eat meat products. Pregnant people should follow current medical guidance for ready-to-eat meats, inspect packaging and avoid products that are damaged, swollen, leaking or recalled.

Anyone with a weakened immune system should also follow individualized food-safety advice.

Historical March 2025 recall

On March 20, 2025, Chomps and Idaho Smokehouse Partners announced a voluntary recall involving selected lots of Original Beef and Original Turkey sticks because of possible metal fragments.

The recall applied only to specifically listed products packaged at one facility between January 16 and January 23, 2025. Chomps reported two consumer complaints and no reported adverse reactions or injuries at the time of its notice.

Affected Original Beef lots included:

  • 6220A 25016
  • 6220A 25017
  • 6220A 25018
  • 6220A 25020
  • 6220A 25021
  • 6220A 25022

Affected Original Turkey lots included P6220A 25022 and P6220A 25023. The recall was not a blanket recall of all Chomps products.

Consumers should always check current USDA FSIS alerts when a package is unusually old, damaged or associated with a recall notice.

Shelf life and storage

Chomps are shelf-stable until the best-by date shown on the wrapper. Refrigeration is not required before opening.

Store sticks in a cool, dry place away from excessive heat. Do not eat a stick when the wrapper is punctured, swollen, leaking or otherwise compromised.

Sourcing and manufacturing transparency

Chomps currently says:

  • Beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished from domestic and international sources.
  • Turkey is sourced domestically and raised without antibiotics.
  • Chicken is domestically sourced, cage-free and raised without antibiotics.
  • Venison and beef used in venison sticks are grass-fed and grass-finished.

Specific country, ranch and processing-facility details can differ by product and production lot.

B Corp and environmental programs

Chomps is a Certified B Corporation, meaning its social and environmental practices have been assessed against B Lab standards.

The company also partners with 4ocean on plastic-removal projects and reports large product donations to food-access organizations.

B Corp certification evaluates company practices; it does not change the nutrition facts of an individual meat stick.

Use meat sticks as occasional convenience food within a varied diet, pair them with fiber-rich food when possible and account for sodium before eating more than one.
